So…. What is this trip all about????

The looming threat of climate change and global warming means that sustainability is no longer an issue that we as Architects can ignore. It is also not a burden which limits design. As innovation and technology progresses, addressing sustainability issues can be a driver of design, creating influential buildings which can be totally self sufficient.
This raises the question: ‘What responsibilities do individual buildings in our times have?’
Not only should they ‘do their bit’ to reduce their own carbon footprint, but each building is an opportunity to lead the way and set the standard for future development. All this, whilst adapting pragmatic responsibilities along with regulations on form, height, bulk, aesthetics, and contextual issues arising from each specific site.
Of course, a blanket solution for all building types is probably not the answer, a far more complex solution considering contributing factors such as occupants, owners and siting are all related to the expectation of a buildings responsibility to the environment.
This study aims to investigate ways the individual building can make a global difference on climate change. Specifically, how sustainable design is being used to reduce a buildings carbon footprint by creating or generating its own energy whilst responding to its contextual issues controlled by a regulating authority on form, bulk and aesthetics. How does the individual building blend these and the global concerns of climate change.

The intention of this project is to promote architecture as an opportunity for individuals to actively change the world around them by making a global difference in their local environment. It is also a chance to look at some of Europe’s best and well known architecture, as a source of inspiration and education.

This Blog, is a reflection on my experiences whilst on the trip, It encapulates the Venice Biennale but is not soley dedicated to it. The Blog hopes to give some insight into the culture, history and sights in each city visited. It hopes to inspire others to travel and investigate, experience and educate themselves to see the world a little differently.
